Food for Thought

It is the end of the year, a time when I start to ponder what new goals, mantras, or intentions I will put in place for the coming year. I spend the time between New Year’s Day and Epiphany Sunday revisiting the treasures I found throughout the year that really resonated with me, to review my thoughts and perceptions. Have I grown? Changed my view? Or am I still standing on the same square?

This legend continues to be one of my favorite reminders year after year, a great self-examination tool. The legend goes like this:

Two Wolves: A Cherokee Teaching2 wolves

An elderly Cherokee Native American was teaching his grandchildren about life…

He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me, it is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

One wolf is evil — he is fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, competition, superiority and ego.

The other is good—he is joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.

This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other person, too.”

They thought about it for a minute and then one child asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied: “The one you feed.”

What intention will you put forth? Which wolf will you choose to feed?

Hugs,
Casey
