Helping Get SAFE Cosmetics Into the Hands of Everyone

I have always been fascinated by how people attract other people. How does your brain, or maybe your heart, know that a person in the room is the person you are supposed to talk to? So putting my faith in my brain, my heart, and the universe, I decided that I need to meet some new people. So off I go to a brand

Beauty Counter

Beauty Counter

new networking group, found only by my crazy (possibly unhealthy) obsession with Facebook. A group that meets nearly an hour from my home at a banquet facility I have never heard of, called In the Loop in Plainville. After chatting with a few other women in the room, I meet Casey. Actually, I first meet Casey’s editor, Nancy, who introduced me to Casey. And after just a few short minutes, I know that Casey and I have A LOT in common. She began to explain what she has been doing – catching me first with the facts and repercussions of Canidida. How she is helping clients become healthy by cleansing toxins and this great foot bath system that really intrigues me. Her passion for helping people really resonates with me and why I do what I do as well.

Did you know…..

 • There are about 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products, only 10% of those have ever been tested for safety.

 • The US has not passed a federal law regulating ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.

 • Europe has spent the past 2 decades banning or restricting more than 1,300 ingredients –the US has only banned 11 to date.

 • Products that are sold and used every day are allowed to contain ingredients linked to breast cancer, infertility, cell damage, learning disabilities and more.

 • 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime.

 • 1 in 3 children are diagnosed with Autism, ADD, ADHD or Asthma

A year ago, I found a company called Beautycounter. A company dedicated to changing the personal care industry while offering safe, NON TOXIC, effecting products for the whole family. Something I didn’t even think about until after my son was born. Now that he is 2 ½, I am a label reader, a researcher, and an activist, because his health matters, my health matters, and so does yours.

beautycounter-the_complete_collection-195x195_1At Beautycounter, we have banned more than 1,500 ingredients — the 1300 from Europe, the 11 from the US, and then added some of our own that we just don’t trust. This, and our intensive ingredient selection process, sets a new standard for health and safety in the personal care industry. Our mission is to get safe products into the hands of everyone. To that end, we have created 2 skin care lines, a body care line, a kid’s line, a collection of lip sheers, and just released 2 sunscreen products for the whole family.

But Beautycounter doesn’t end with the products. We feel that the facts above and the safety standards in this country are unacceptable. So we are doing something about it. For every client and member signed up, $10 is donated to one of 3 trusted non-profit groups working to change the regulations in the US. Those groups are: The Environmental Working Group, The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, and Healthy Child, Healthy World.

For more information, please check us out online at www.colleengrady.beautycounter.com.

My life has changed in the past year working with this company. Not only am I able to provide these amazing products to people, but I also get to be out meeting new people in the industry of helping others. I look forward to working more with Casey and even getting to experience her foot bath and detox programs!

Thank you!

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event Fairfield CT May 3rd 2014

I made LOTS of friends at the 2nd Annual WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES event on Saturday May 3rd 2014 in Fairfield, CT. This is a walk to spread awareness of the problem of domestic abuse, to put a stop to sexual assault and violence against women.

It’s all part of the White Ribbon Campaign – a different approach to combating violence against women which involves not only teaching women how not to be victims, but also educating MEN and BOYS how not to be perpetrators. Of course awareness is the first and most important step. Lots of that was raised at this very special event, in addition to money to help fund programs like those offered at the Center for Family Justice.

I’m going to work on bringing this event to Southington, CT next! Check out the images below….

Local Author Speaks Out Against Domestic Violence by Brittany Knowles

Brittany Knowles is today’s guest blogger. She is a college student who wrote such a beautiful article for her journalism class, we just had to share it …..

Casey shared with me that it has been seven years since she first sat down at her kitchen table with her legal padCasey Morley and pen. She had many sleepless nights back then.   Little did she know this was going to become the longest journal she had ever written evolving into Casey Morley’s soon-to-be-published book “Crawling Out”.

Her mission is to educate, raise awareness and unmask the secrecy of domestic violence. Throughout her heartfelt journey of writing her book, she has healed emotionally. “I have learned not to hold onto any anger,  no longer carry anyone else’s guilt or shame, and to forgive,” Morley said.

Morley has spoken at Southington’s 45th Apple Harvest Festival, Southington Chamber of Commerce meetings, Southington Staples, Meriden YMCA, and in her salon, Casey’s Image Consultants. When she speaks about the content of her book, often her clients begin to share their own horrific story. “At times tears start falling almost from the first word,” Morley said. “I hope from sharing my story, I will give hope to people so that they too have the strength and courage to begin their journey of crawling out.”

During her journey, her son Michael has been a huge supporter. When talking about her son Michael, imageCasey said with a smile, “My son is a fine, upstanding young man, finishing his third year of college, majoring in criminal justice. I was brought to tears by a sentence in his college essay: ‘I want to be the one who is called on to help women and children.’ Tears over no matter how hard I tried to protect him, he still suffered. He gets it.”

When interviewing Michael, he said he remembers seeing legal pads all over the house. “Her determination to give me the best life she could as a single mom taught me what dedication, loyalty and love is all about. I learned that even through debilitating circumstances perseverance will get you through anything life will throw at you. I am very proud of her,” Michael said.

Nancy Hooper, Morley’s editor, has also been important throughout Morley’s journey. She described Morley as an ebullient, loving person with a strong will, and a deep faith. “By the time we were ready to submit, she breezed through those stories that had previously stopped her in her tracks, had her in tears. Our editing method seemed to allow her the opportunity to follow the grieving process—tears, anger, acceptance.” Nancy now describes Morley as her “closest friend”. Morley is a true example of a strong, independent woman, who wants to reach out and
make a change.

Morley is affiliated with the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) and a member of the Professional Beauty Association, which has their own campaign against domestic violence titled, ‘Cut It Out’.  Morley raised $687.00 for domestic abuse which was distributed between the above two agencies and Prudence Crandall, Southington’s safe haven. To build her author platform, Morley has developed a website. On her site she shares personal stories. “I hope my website will offer a discrete avenue of help for victims of domestic violence. I hope my personal stories are a gentle nudge to awareness,” Morley said. To pre-order a copy of her book, “Crawling Out” email casey@caseymorley.com or call her salon, Casey’s Image Consultants, 860-628-8857. For more information about Morley or domestic violence awareness, visit her website www.caseymorley.com

Post by Brittany Knowles: “I am a sophomore at Central Connecticut State University, majoring in Elementary Education.  One of my assignments for my journalism class was to pick someone I brittany knowlesthought was important and write a profile about them.  I’ve known Casey for the past 3 1/2 years and have become quite close and as her computer helper, I began to see her passion and her mission as she worked on her book, Crawling Out.  I thought interviewing Casey would be a perfect example of a strong woman who is fighting for something important.  By following Casey on her journey, I have learned the alarming statistics and real horror she endured.  I want to share her story and encourage others to be aware and know that there is a way out.  I was so excited to hand in this assignment to help Casey on her mission to educate.  As Casey says, “everyone knows someone who is being abused.”  She often adds “how does someone get out of something they don’t know they’re in.”  I am honored to be a guest blogger on her eye opening, informative, moving website.”

No More Excuses

NO MORE: Excuses for Inaction

More than 40 celebrities and public figures appear in the ads, which are designed specifically to urge bystanders to get involved. In the previous post you can watch the video of this great No More campaign.

Below are some examples of the excuses for inaction that the No More campaign highlights:

NO MORE: “He comes from such a good family.”no more

NO MORE: “She was flirting with him.”

NO MORE: “It’s none of my business.”

NO MORE: “Why didn’t she tell anyone?”

NO MORE: “She seems fine to me.”

NO MORE: “I’m sure they will work it out.”

NO MORE: “Boys will be boys.”

NO More: “Well, what was she wearing?”

NO More: “Hey, he said he was sorry.”

NO MORE: “But he goes to my church.”

NO MORE: “Well, he was drunk.”

NO MORE: “She was asking for it.”

NO MORE: But he’s such a nice guy.”

NO MORE: “It’s just a misunderstanding.”

NO MORE: “She’s too smart to let that happen.”

NO MORE: “Why doesn’t she just leave?”

NO MORE: “She was drunk.”

Campaigns like this one focusing on bystander intervention are crucial, as they break this pattern by helping us as a society to move away from individual framework that fosters victim-blaming, to a community that fosters connection and intervention. Please do your part get involved, everybody knows someone that is suffering. Become a crusader for bystanders NO MORE.

How Abusers Exercise Control & Power Over Victims

How Physical and Sexual Abusers Exercise POWER & CONTROL Over Their Victims

Those who have never suffered from abuse have difficulty understanding why victims stay in abusive relationships/situations. If you’ve never experienced it, you can’t possibly know what victims go through. So often people will ask questions like, “why didn’t she leave him?” If only it could be so easy.

Since it is my goal to bring about a greater awareness of the huge problem of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse, I’d like to share with you some information about how perpetrators exercise power and control over their victims. Hopefully this will finally answer the questions “why doesn’t she get out?”

USING INTIMIDATION:

 • Making her afraid by using looks actions, gestures, smashing things
 • Destroying her property
 • Abusing pets
 • Displaying weapons

USING COERCION & THREATS:

Control Wheel

Control Wheel

 • Making and/or carrying out threats to do something to hurt her
 • Threatening to leave her, to commit suicide, to report her to welfare
 • Making  her drop charges
 • Making her do illegal things

USING EMOTIONAL ABUSE:

 • Putting her down
 • Making her feel bad about herself
 • Calling her names
 • Making her think she’s crazy
 • Playing mind games
 • Humiliating her
 • Making her feel guilty

USING ISOLATION:

 • Controlling what she does, who she sees and talks to, what she reads
 • Limiting her outside involvement and where she goes
 • Using jealousy to justify actions

MINIMIZING DENYING & BLAMING:

 • Making light of the abuse and not taking her concerns about it seriously
 • Saying the abuse didn’t happen
 • Shifting responsibility for abusive behavior, saying she caused it

USING CHILDREN:

 • Making her feel guilty about the children
 • Using the children to relay messages
 • Using visitation to harass her
 • Threatening to take children away

USING MALE PRIVILEGE:

 • Treating her like a servant
 • Making all the big decisions
 • Acting like the “master of the castle”
 • Being the one to define men’s and women’s roles

USING ECONOMIC ABUSE:

 • Preventing her from getting or keeping a job
 • Making her ask for money
 • Giving her an allowance
 • Taking her money
 • Not letting her know about or have access to family income

Many victims of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse were also abused as children. Violence to them is “normal”, abuse is all they know. How do you get out of something you don’t even know you’re in?

Please take just a few minutes to Want to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes ….. this beautiful poem tells the compelling story of a typical day in the life of a victim of domestic violence. Hopefully, it will answer the question so many ask … “why didn’t she just leave him”?

“In Her Shoes”

Would YOU walk a mile in her shoes?

A few weeks back I attended a domestic violence training sponsored by the CCADV (Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence). One of the speakers at this training was Captain Gary MacNamara Chief of Police for the Town of Fairfield, CT.

I had the pleasure of speaking with him after the training for a few minutes. He sent me a link to the Center for Women and Families website for information on how to be part of the White Ribbon campaign. That’s where I got side tracked by this amazing poem. It  tells exactly what we survivors have endured. Please take a few minutes and read it. I hope it answers the question so many ask …..  “why didn’t she just leave?”

“In Her Shoes”

A Poem by a Survivor of Abuse

Her eye is black,
Her nose bleeds red,
Yet she still has to sleep with him,
In the same bed.

He says he’s sorry,
One more time,
She numbs her pain,
With a glass of wine.

Her children fight,
And swear, and yell,
Her life becomes a living hell.

She knows the reason
This is so,
Unfortunately,
It’s all they know.

If you had the option to choose,
Would you walk a mile in her shoes?

Whatever goes wrong,
She gets the blame,
It’s all a part of his
controlling game.

He tells her she’s old,
And stupid, and fat,
As he threatens her with a baseball bat.

The police arrive,
Once again…
This is visit number ten.

He tells them yet another lie,
Will she ever get out,
Or will she die?

If you had the option to choose,
Would you walk a mile in her shoes?

He says the Law’s,
Not on her side,
And if she leaves,
He won’t provide.

He monitors,
Her every move,
Her whereabouts,
She has to prove.

With any man,
That she may meet,
He accuses her,
Of being a cheat.

She can’t go out,
He takes her phone,
She lives in fear,
Of the unknown.

If you had the option to choose,
Would you walk a mile in her shoes?

In a fetal position,
On her bed,
She wonders if,
She’s better off dead.

She feels so alone,
She feels trapped,
All of her energy and resources,
have been tapped.

The things he says,
Don’t hold much merit,
But they’re enough,
To break her spirit.

She works so hard,
To try to hide,
The stress and hurt,
She feels inside.

If you had the option to choose,
Would you walk a mile in her shoes?

What is the reason
That makes her stay?
The children, money…
She sees no way?

It’s all too much,
To untwist,
The things that have happened,
Too many to list.

Physical, verbal,
Emotional trauma,
A life filled with,
Too much drama.

The things she”s been through,
Make it hard to cope,
She feels like,
There is no hope.

If you had the option to choose,
Would you walk a mile in her shoes?

She loses perspective,
So easily,
To the things he says,
She’ll comply and agree.

He says the children,
He’s going to keep,
If she ever leaves,
This makes her weep.

She’s convinced,
There’s nowhere to turn,
Unaware,
Of all she can learn.

She can begin to heal,
And regain her sanity,
With the help of,
The Center for Women and Families.

So TODAY, you have the option to choose,
Do you have the strength to walk a mile in her shoes?

This coming May Walk a Mile In Her Shoes – Fairfield, White Ribbon Committee Chair, Fairfield Police Chief Gary McNamera will be leading an initiative to help promote awareness about Sexual Violence. On average, more than three women die as a result of domestic violence EVERY DAY (Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Date Brief).  Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted (U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey).white ribbon

In response to this violence, The Center for Women and Families recognizes that men and boys need to be part of the solution, and as a result, created its own White Ribbon Campaign Taskforce whose primary focus is engaging men to end violence against women.

Here are seven things identified by The International White Ribbon Campaign Committee to help end gender-based violence and promote gender equity, healthy relationships and positive ideals of masculinity.

 1. Think about the kind of man you want to be. Be true to yourself.
 2. Never use force, threats, or violence in your relationships with others.
 3. Wear a white ribbon and speak out against violence against women.
 4. Be a good role model and share with those around you the importance of respecting women and girls.
 5. Learn about the impact of violence against women in our communities.
 6. Challenge and speak out against hurtful language, sexist jokes, and bullying.
 7. Accept your role as a guy in helping end violence against women. It affects everyone.

The History of White Ribbon

The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women. In 1991, a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out about violence against women after The Montreal Massacre on December 6, 1989. On that day, 14 female students at the Ecole Polytechnique were killed.

Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. Now in over 55 countries, campaigns are led by both men and women.

This coming May, Walk a Mile In Her Shoes – Fairfield, White Ribbon Committee Chair, Fairfield Police Chief Gary McNamera will be leading an initiative to help promote awareness about Sexual Violence. We need your help to spread the word to all males that want to be a part of the solution, either by being on our committee or participating in our event. The mission is to end violence against women by engaging men in the process of personal, relational, and social change. Chief McNamera and the rest of committee members encourage everyone to take the pledge and take a stand against violence against women!

No More

Bystanders Please Get Involved!

SILENCE and BYSTANDER INACTION …  that is was prevents any real change from occurring to the sad state of affairs concerning domestic violence. According to the “No More Study”, conducted by GFK Public Affairs & Corporate Communications, and funded by the Avon Foundation for Women:

60% Of Americans know a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault.

73% of parents with children under the age of 18 said that they have not had a conversation about domestic violence or sexual assault with their children.no more

67% of Americans say they have not talked about domestic violence with their friends and 73% have not
discussed sexual assault.

80% believe domestic violence is a problem in our society, but only 15% think it is a problem among their friends.

75% of Americans say they would step in and help if they saw even a stranger being abused, but in reality, most people do not help.

Clearly, the general public is not talking much about this issue. As the research findings indicate, we still have a long way to go. Help us unmask the best kept secret. Stop reverting to self-protective [victim blaming] thoughts. Hop on the “Bystander No More” wagon and do something. Step up for the cause. Learn, talk, share, get involved. You can find numerous resources on my resource page. I urge you to check them out pick one and please, get involved. Make “Bystanders No More” your new mantra.

Advice From a Friend

I am always so grateful when my readers take the time to comment on my posts and share their experiences. After all, that is what blogging is all about …. conversation (the 2-way kind). I just had to share this comment that I received recently from a friend because she was so kind to offer words of praise, encouragement and most importantly, hope! Here’s what she had to say …..

“Wow Casey, I’m glad pcc_header_40you had such a meaningful and helpful experience with this. I’ve witnessed the incredible amount of healing you’ve done and how you’ve overcome so much. I admire how you are helping others this way.

My kids were helped by 2 resources you mentioned, and I can’t say enough about how much they helped my kids heal from the trauma they experienced.  My daughter worked with the child advocate at the Prudence Crandall Center, and this was a remarkably helpful experience for her–she was someone safe for her to verbalize what she’d been exposed to, and she received validation and practical help.

My son worked with a trauma counselor at the National Center for Children Exposed to Violence, where he received wonderful therapy and began his healing.  I’m so thankful for both of those agencies!  They also helped give me hope!

cats missionAlso remarkably helpful were the “CATS” (Child Abuse Treatment Services) program at the Klingberg  Family Center in New Britain and the wonderful trauma therapists at the Klingberg Outpatient center in downtown New Britain.  I’d HIGHLY RECOMMEND all of these services to anyone seeking healing/treatment for their children who’ve been exposed to domestic violence.   THERE IS HOPE AND HEALING!”

Please feel free to share your experiences too! Only by coming together will there ever be hope for making a difference.

Just for Today

With just a few weeks into the New Year I wanted to remind you it is a chance for new beginnings, an
opportunity to be done with destructive old habits. A wonderful time to create healthy new ones. I would like to share bits and pieces from a list of New Year’s resolutions that were adapted by Pauline Phillips, fromafg 2 the original credo of Al-Anon.

Just for Today: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once.

Just for Today: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me.

Just for Today: I will accept what is. I will face reality.

Just for Today: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Just for Today: I will be kind and courteous to those that cross my path, and not speak ill of others.

Just for Today: I will only work on improving myself.

Just for Today: I will do something positive to improve one aspect of my life.

Just for Today: I will gather up courage to do what is right and take responsibility for my own actions.

When I read this quick list on January 1st it reminded me to stay on track and not take on more than necessary on any one given day. After all I know that I can hang in for 24 hours doing any one of the above. I am sure you can to. Let’s lift our thoughts to ….. Just for Today!  Let me know how you did by leaving a comment below.

Thank You Friends and Neighbors

As I shared in one of my earlier posts, October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I thought this would be a great time to share my soon-to-be-published book, Crawling_Out_Cover_FINALCrawling Out, the story of my own journey of overcoming a life filled with domestic abuse.

You see, after pondering the alarming statistics on the many domestic abuse advocacy websites, I thought, how can I help? I realized this is a huge mountain to climb. The more I researched, the bigger it got. Well I went back to the old teachings of the nuns back in the day in Catholic school. Break it  down, take small steps, maybe outline.

So I came up with the idea of enlarging my “Soon-to-be-Published” book flyer to an 11 x 17 size, printing several, and having Staples laminate them. I then started asking my neighbors, at home and at work, to help me raise domestic violence awareness by displaying my “Soon-to-be-Published” laminated message in their businesses. Happily, I had to keep returning to Staples to make more!

I am ecstatic to share with you a list of my helpers who readily hopped on board to help me spread the news of my new book and help put a stop to this epidemic that is swirling all around us. Domestic violence is one of the largest unmasked secrets and that has to change.

As you can see, the list of my local friends supporting my mission is quite long. I am so grateful for their support, grateful for them letting my soon-to-be-published newsletter take up space in their storefront windows.I am looking forward to watching this list grow!

I have already started to receive incredible feedback from women and men expressing the need for this information to be spread. Every person who has spoken to me has talked about either their experience or that of someone they know. Certainly affirming to me that the time for awareness and permission to unmask the secrecy is NOW.

Please take some time to stop by these wonderful local businesses and check out their websites. They are all great people. I would love to add you to my list. Please contact me at 860-628-8857 if you’d like to post one of my “Soon-to-be-Published” flyers in your place of business.
