Connecticut Author’s Day
Local authors celebrate the first annual Connecticut Author’s Day, September 1st, 2015.
Award-winning author June Hyjek, President of APSS, Connecticut said, “We thought it was time that all authors in Connecticut be celebrated and to shine a light on illiteracy. When you look at the names of those who have lived and created here, from Mark Twain to Dominick Dunne, you see the shaping of America’s culture. While the bold faced names get most of the attention this day intends to celebrate all authors who choose to call Connecticut home. Books combat illiteracy. Even if a book doesn’t become a bestseller, it doesn’t mean that it hasn’t added value to someone’s life. Every book is important; every author is important.”
Hyjek goes on to say, “it is our hope that we can illuminate an often overlooked day of honor, National Authors’ Day which is November 1st. “It is our intention to use this platform of Connecticut Authors’ Day to inspire authors and readers to make National Authors’ Day a nationwide celebration of those who bring knowledge, joy, and inspiration to others through books.”

Getting to the Heart of it
Balancing Mind Body and Spirit
Let’s get to the heart of it …
Did you know that an estimated 85.6 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease? This is a staggering number. Heart disease is the #1 leading cause of death, second only to cancer.
Heart disease is not an “old persons” disease, and it doesn’t just happen to fried food eating junkies.I know someone who had a heart attack at the age of 26! He was fit, he played sports and he was too young to die. Believe it or not, this is not a rare story these days.
It is time to take heart (pardon the pun) and pay attention to your heart health. It couldn’t be any easier with the M’lis Heart Healthy Essentials. These fantastic stick packs have a refreshing citrus flavor. Simply mix one packet a day in 8 oz. of water shake/mix and enjoy.
Call me today at 860-628-8857 to learn more. In addition to offering M’lis wellness products and Lifestyle Change Programs, I also offer facials, Ion Cleanse Foot Baths, and hormone testing.

A Prayer For Victims of Abuse
I was cleaning out a nightstand in my bedroom last week and came across a folder, it was full of papers from a training program I attended back in October of 2006. I really have no memory of what appears to of been a very full and eventful day. Enclosed in the folder was this poem after reading it I was nudged by spirit to share it with you ….
A Prayer For Victims of Abuse
God of endless love,
Ever caring, ever strong,
Always present, always just
You gave your only Son
to save us by the blood of his cross.
Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace,
Join to your own suffering
The pain of all who have been hurt
In body, mind, and spirit
By those who betrayed the trust placed in them.
Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters.
Breathe wisdom into our prayers,
Soothe restless hearts with hope,
Steady shaken spirits with faith:
Show us the way to justice and wholeness,
Enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.
Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts,
Heal your people’s wounds
And transform our brokenness.
Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace,
So that we may act with justice
And find peace in you.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen

Shame
That burden on your shoulders bogging you down, could be shame. That heaviness crushing your chest making it hard to breathe, could be shame too. It might be that critic in your head, the one that fills you up with endless horrible messages.
The dictionary defines shame as: a painful emotion caused by a strong sense of guilt, embarrassment, unworthiness, or disgrace; the consciousness of guilt, shortcoming, or impropriety. A condition of humiliating disgrace or disrepute; One that brings dishonor, disgrace or condemnation.
Do you feel shame?
Most child abuse and domestic violence victims live their lives, never realizing they are carrying around truck loads of shame. It’s usually hidden deep within, often masked by denial, excuses and addiction. It can be a feeling of living under a heavy dirty old blanket of guilt, unworthiness and disgrace.
Shame is emotional punishment for doing what our conscience tells us is bad. Shame is emotional pain that turns into physical pain that can lead to health problems. Shame can make us twitch, or blush in anguish. Shame can drive some to act out violently against themselves or others. I think is the worst and most damaging feeling in the entire spectrum of emotions.
For me, all the silence and the secrecy escalated my feelings of inferiority and unworthiness. I never felt good enough. Year after year that deep hidden emotion caused depression, guilt, humiliation, discomfort, mortification and all kinds of physical ailments. It was absolutely debilitating.
Like most victims, it took me years to understand …. all that shame was never mine to carry. I was innocent. I did nothing wrong. I did not bring dishonor or disgrace to myself or anyone else – my perpetrators did. And my perpetrators were themselves once abused children who carried about their own shame … that’s why I’ve made it my mission to stop the insidious cycle of abuse.
Will you join me?
To Your healing tomorrows.
Hugs,
Casey

A Letter Postmarked March 19, 2015
Casey I read your book Crawling Out, and the more I read, the more I wanted to read. As I got deeper and deeper into the reading, a journey started within me that began to evoke all sorts of questions. In The beginning that’s all it was, just questions. How could adults treat children the way they were treating you? What made them feel entitled to do so? What was the abuse doing to you? How could you ever recover from it? So many questions, all without answers.
As my reading continued I found myself being a cheer leader for you. I was inspired by your courage and determination in spite of the overwhelming sense of helplessness that surrounded you. Through it all though it was clear that you were extremely smart and resourceful and I believed that you would eventually find a way to break free. When you finally managed to get out and stay with a normal family I was cheering for you. That a way girl! I had no idea of the magnitude of your story. As the story continued and you went from one abusive situation into another, I started to realize the magnitude of the cycle of abuse. I don’t know how many times I was screaming out, Just Get Away. But getting away wasn’t easy. You were surrounded by people that was so abused themselves they wouldn’t have recognized the abuse if it smacked them in the face. But you never gave up, you are a fighter, a real hero and someone that has become an inspiration to us all. By the time I finished the book I understood so much more about abuse and had answers to the questions I started with.
I felt the need to write you because it has become clear to me that crawling out never stops, not for me or for you or anyone else. You need to keep writing, advocating and doing the things you are doing today and always not only for us but for yourself. Thank you for writing this book and God Bless You.
Your friend forever,
Robert

Not Just for Tears and Prayers
I am a promoter for Our lady of Calvary Retreat Center, and as the title says, it is not just a place for tears and prayers. Last week friends and family members gathered together to enjoy a Humor Workshop. Our presenter, the one and only Marie DiBenedetto.
My friend Marie is a past OLC retreat team member who has brought joy to many of my retreat experiences. She is also a retired nurse, and a spiritual director. Marie teaches us that laughter and being playful is healing and helpful.
She gave us great advice, like making a list of 20 things you like to do, and making it a point to accomplish at least 10 of them every day. The list doesn’t have to be a long and stressful list of accomplishments. It can simply be a list of life’s simple self-indulgence pleasures, like enjoying a cup of tea, reading inspirational literature, reaching out to a friend, taking a walk, or meditating.
Marie reminded us that we have to take care of ourselves, so that we can better be able to take care of others. Being able to laugh at ourselves, act silly, or tell a joke can provide much needed comfort in anxious or sad situations. A good laugh, when we’re depressed can help us gain the relief and perspective we may desperately need.
We were invited to experience Marie… like ripples moving out into the pond, her joy and positive disposition touched us all, and she encourages us to spread that joy to others.
If your group, church, or organization could use a good laugh, or just a reason to gather around and have some fun, please leave me a comment, or give me a call @ 860 628-8857. I will be sure to get your request to Marie.
Demonstrating their commitment to spreading the message of hope to victims of domestic violence and child abuse, my book Crawling Out is on sale at Our Lady of Calvary Retreat Center book store. Our Lady of Calvary Retreat Center is located at 31 Colton Street, in Farmington Connecticut.

It Made a Difference
You may have heard this story before:
A man at the beach sees thousands of starfish washed ashore by the tide. He notices a young girl throwing them back into the sea, one by one. “Don’t bother!” he tells her. “There are too many starfish to save. What you’re doing won’t make a difference.”
The little girl throws another starfish into the water, turns to the man, and says, “It made a difference to that one!” Moved by her reply, the man joined her. Seeing them, other people join in. Through their efforts, many starfish were saved.
I share this story because in my view, victims of domestic violence are just like those starfish, washed up from the fear, exhaustion, the battle of surviving day in and day out.Victims need people with the heart of that little girl.
Join in and be part of making a difference one or to many. Be a part of making someone’s tomorrows better than their yesterdays. Visit my Resources page to learn about the many organizations, doing great things, that need your help.
Together we can make a difference.
Hugs,
Casey
